"I call his work poetry, he calls it country stories. Those who read his work call it funny, sad, and beautiful all at the same time. . . .Not only do I recommend that you buy the book, I recommend you give the book as presents.
Dennis Smith, Publisher, Northern California Traveler

From the Preface of Them Peas . . .

One winter, a quiet one, while working for Dean Neer, selling real estate in Modoc County, I read an article Dean had written for the Modoc Historical Society, "Teacher."  I was impressed with his literary skills, so in an effort to inspire him to additional literary efforts, I challenged him to a write off.  "You write somethin' then I'll write somethin'," sez I.  So Ol' Dean whipped out a poem, "JI and the Big Coyote."  I responded with "Them Peas."     One day when I was out to lunch, more so than JI and JDusual, Dean showed "Them Peas" to Dennis Smith.  Dennis, a perceptive individual, sez to Dean, "Huh!  Do you s'pose he'd let me print it in The Northern California Traveler?"  "Sure he would, "sez Dean.  "Well, do you think he'd do ten a year?" asks Dennis.  "Sure he would," sez Dean.

Upon my return from lunch, I discovered I was contracted out.  So there I was, a flunk-out in English 1A at UNR, contracted out to write poetry.  "Ha!  They know not what they do," I thought.

After consulting with my advisor, Jack Daniels, I agreed to give it a try.   (It was a lengthySouth Fork of the Pit River consultation.)   My rationale being, if you do it incorrectly, you can can call it creative style.  And if, or more accurately, when my punctuation was amiss, I could simply say, "You can do it that way in poetry."  So with my Jack D. inspired plan, I wrote a few poems, shaking in some periods and commas like salt and pepper on a bland diet.  Unfortunately, Jack and I had overlooked spelling.  Enter Marie Neer, good friend and English teacher, who realizing I might be a tad defensive, agreed to a knot bumping, rather than a cabinet making approach, to correct the more blatant problems.  She kept my hogs roaming on the ranch rather than being on the Rome in Italy, and mildly added and subtracted my apostrophes and their punctual kin, and occasionally smoothed off a few of the bigger bumps.

So now you see who's actually responsible here.  If you are dissatisfied, disappointed, unhappy, disturbed or mad about this book, contact Dean or Marie or Dennis Smith.  If, by some strange reason, you like this book, contact me, John Callaghan at neer@frontiernet.net.  Or print and send an order form.  I would be happy to ponder all your comments seriously with my advisor, Jack Daniels.
